The Benefits of CBD Hemp Oil for Chronic Pain

50 million Americans live with chronic pain. If conventional treatments haven't given you your life back, here's what the science — and our founder's 23-year personal journey — says about CBD hemp oil.

By Ron Lev, Founder of Reclaim Labs · 12 min read · Medically reviewed

Chronic pain is one of the most debilitating — and misunderstood — conditions in modern medicine. It doesn't show up on most imaging scans. It doesn't have a simple cure. And for millions of people, it becomes a daily companion that medications alone can't fully manage.

If you're dealing with persistent pain — whether it's widespread throughout your body or locked in a specific area like your lower back, knees, or neck — you've probably heard about CBD hemp oil. But does it actually work? And is it right for your specific situation?

In this guide, we'll break down what chronic pain actually is, what the research says about CBD, and how people like our founder Ron Lev have used it to reclaim quality of life after years of conventional treatment.

    WHAT IS CHRONIC PAIN?

Chronic pain is generally defined as pain that persists for three months or longer, either continuously or intermittently — often outlasting the original injury or illness that triggered it. In many cases, it develops with no clear external cause at all, driven instead by changes in how the nervous system processes pain signals.

Unlike acute pain (which is your body's short-term alarm system), chronic pain serves no protective function. It simply persists — reshaping daily routines, disrupting sleep, and taking a profound toll on mental health and quality of life.

    Types of Chronic Pain

Chronic pain presents in many forms. The most common include:

    • Widespread musculoskeletal pain — diffuse aching across multiple muscle groups and joints, often associated with inflammation or conditions like fibromyalgia
    • Localized joint pain — concentrated in specific joints (knees, hips, hands, spine), often driven by osteoarthritis or injury-related degeneration
    • Lower back pain — the single most common form of chronic pain globally, affecting the lumbar spine, surrounding muscles, and nerves
    • Neuropathic pain — burning, shooting, or electric sensations caused by nerve damage or dysfunction, as seen in diabetic neuropathy or sciatica
    • Inflammatory pain — persistent inflammation in joints or tissues, as in rheumatoid arthritis or other autoimmune conditions
    • Headache disorders — chronic migraines or tension headaches occurring 15 or more days per month

Many people experience more than one type simultaneously. Regardless of the category, the underlying challenge is the same: the body's pain-processing system has shifted into a state of prolonged activation.

    WHAT IS CBD HEMP OIL?

CBD (cannabidiol) is one of over 100 naturally occurring compounds called cannabinoids found in the hemp plant (Cannabis sativa). Unlike THC, the compound responsible for marijuana's psychoactive effects, CBD does not produce any intoxication. It works instead by interacting with your body's endocannabinoid system (ECS) — a regulatory network that plays a central role in managing pain, inflammation, sleep, and stress.

Hemp oil (also called CBD hemp extract) is derived from hemp plants that contain less than 0.3% THC by federal law. High-quality full-spectrum and broad-spectrum extracts contain CBD alongside other beneficial plant compounds — terpenes, flavonoids, and minor cannabinoids — that work together in what researchers call the "entourage effect", producing more comprehensive results than isolated CBD alone.

No, it will not make you high. CBD hemp oil derived from hemp contains only trace amounts of THC (below 0.3%) — far too little to produce any psychoactive effect. Broad-spectrum and CBD isolate formulations have THC removed entirely.

Following the passage of the 2018 Farm Bill, hemp-derived CBD products are federally legal in the United States. They're widely available in all 50 states. Reclaim Labs products are compliant with federal law and are third-party tested to confirm THC levels meet legal requirements.

IS HEMP OIL EFFECTIVE FOR CHRONIC PAIN?

Research into CBD and chronic pain has grown substantially over the past decade. While the FDA has not approved CBD as a treatment for chronic pain conditions (except for one specific epilepsy drug), a growing body of clinical and preclinical research suggests meaningful benefits for pain management:

    • A 2020 review published in the Journal of Clinical Medicine found that CBD may reduce pain and inflammation in conditions including arthritis, neuropathic pain, and cancer-related pain.
    • A 2018 review in Frontiers in Pharmacology concluded that CBD has "considerable potential as a treatment for multiple anxiety disorders" — a co-condition that amplifies chronic pain perception in a significant share of sufferers.
    • Animal studies have demonstrated that CBD reduces inflammatory markers and inhibits pain transmission pathways, particularly those associated with joint inflammation.
    • Real-world surveys consistently show that chronic pain is the most common reason people report using CBD products — and the majority of those users report meaningful relief.

CBD vs. Common Chronic Pain Treatments

Here's how CBD hemp oil compares to the most commonly used chronic pain management approaches on key dimensions that matter to long-term sufferers:

Treatment Pain Relief Anti-Inflammatory Addiction Risk Long-Term Safety Sleep Quality
    CBD Hemp Oil ✓ Moderate–High ✓ Yes ✓ None ✓ Excellent ✓ Improves
    NSAIDs (e.g. Ibuprofen) ⚠ Moderate ✓ Yes ✓ None ✗ GI/kidney risk ⚠ Neutral
Opioids ✓ High ✗ No ✗ Very high ✗ Poor ✗ Disrupts REM
    Corticosteroids ⚠ Short-term ✓ Strong ✓ None ✗ Bone/immune risk ⚠ Neutral
Antidepressants (SNRIs) ⚠ Partial ✗ No ⚠ Low ⚠ Variable ⚠ May help
    Physical Therapy ✓ Moderate ✓ Indirect ✓ None ✓ Excellent ✓ Helps

Reported Benefits of CBD Hemp Oil for Chronic Pain
    • Natural reduction in pain intensity — particularly in joint and musculoskeletal pain
    • Anti-inflammatory effects that may address underlying causes, not just symptoms
    • Improved sleep quality (restorative sleep accelerates recovery and lowers pain sensitivity)
    • Reduction in anxiety and stress that commonly amplifies pain perception
    • Muscle relaxation and reduced tension around painful areas
    • No addiction potential — a critical benefit for those concerned about opioid dependency
"I'd been in pain every day for 23 years. Not discomfort — real, debilitating pain. CBD was the first thing in two decades that actually let me sleep through the night and wake up not dreading my own body." — Ron Lev, Founder of Reclaim Labs

OUR FOUNDER'S PERSONAL JOURNEY WITH PAIN

Reclaim Labs wasn't built in a lab by researchers who'd read about pain. It was built by Ron Lev, someone who lived with Rheumatoid Arthritis for over 30 years — spending 23 of them managing chronic inflammation and joint pain with steroids, NSAIDs, and biologics.

By his late 40s, Ron had tried every mainstream treatment available. Some helped temporarily. None solved the underlying problem. The side effects — weight gain, bone density loss, immune suppression — created new problems on top of the original one.

When Ron began researching CBD hemp oil seriously, he wasn't looking for a miracle. He was looking for relief without the trade-offs. What he found changed his life — and eventually led him to formulate the products Reclaim Labs now sells.

"I formulated this for myself first," Ron says. "When I started sharing it with others in chronic pain communities and heard the same responses over and over — 'I finally slept,' 'my flare-up settled,' 'I stopped reaching for the ibuprofen every four hours' — that's when I knew it needed to become a real company."

HOW TO USE CBD HEMP OIL FOR CHRONIC PAIN

    Oral Supplementation (Systemic Relief)

For widespread or deep chronic pain, a full-spectrum or broad-spectrum CBD oil taken sublingually (under the tongue) is the most effective delivery method. Placing drops under the tongue and holding for 60–90 seconds allows the CBD to absorb directly into the bloodstream through the mucous membranes — bypassing digestion for faster onset and higher bioavailability.

Typical starting dosage: 15–25mg CBD daily, taken in the morning and/or evening. Increase gradually every 5–7 days until you find your effective dose. Most chronic pain users settle between 30mg and 75mg daily.

Important: CBD is not a one-dose fix. Most users report the most significant benefits after 2–4 weeks of consistent use, as cannabinoids accumulate in the body's fat tissues and the endocannabinoid system recalibrates.

    Topical Application (Targeted, Localized Relief)

For pain that's concentrated in a specific area — a bad knee, the lower back, sore shoulders — a CBD-infused topical can be applied directly to the skin over the painful area. Topicals don't enter the bloodstream, so they work locally on the underlying tissue, providing targeted relief without systemic effects.

Our CBD Pain Freeze Roll-On Stick combines 1000mg of hemp extract with menthol and cooling agents for fast-acting localized relief. Many users apply it before activity (to prevent pain escalation) and after (to manage post-exertion inflammation).

Best approach for chronic pain: Use both. The oral oil provides systemic, all-day foundation-level relief; the topical handles acute flare-ups and localized hotspots.

    FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How long does CBD take to work for chronic pain?

Most people notice some effect within the first week of use — often improved sleep quality first, followed by gradual reduction in pain intensity. The most significant benefits typically develop over 2–4 weeks of consistent daily use. Unlike pain medications, CBD works cumulatively by supporting the endocannabinoid system, so give it time before adjusting your dose.

Will CBD interact with my pain medications?

CBD is metabolized by the same liver enzymes (CYP450) as many common medications. If you're taking prescription medications — particularly blood thinners, certain antidepressants, or opioids — speak with your doctor before starting CBD. That said, many people use CBD alongside medications under medical supervision without issue.

What's the right CBD dosage for chronic pain?

There is no universal dosage — it varies by body weight, metabolism, severity of pain, and individual endocannabinoid system response. A common starting point is 15–25mg of CBD per day, split between morning and evening doses. Increase by 5–10mg every week until you find the level that provides relief. Most chronic pain users land between 30mg and 75mg daily. Our quiz can help guide you to the right product and starting dose.

Is CBD better than opioids or NSAIDs for chronic pain?

CBD is not a replacement for prescribed medications and we cannot make that claim. What research and real-world use consistently show is that CBD offers meaningful pain relief with a substantially lower risk profile than opioids (no addiction potential, no overdose risk) and without the gastrointestinal side effects common with long-term NSAID use. Many people use CBD as a complement to reduce their reliance on higher-risk medications — always with their doctor's knowledge.

Does full-spectrum work better than isolate for pain?

Research and user experience both suggest that broad-spectrum extracts outperform isolate CBD for chronic pain. The "entourage effect" — the synergistic interaction between CBD, minor cannabinoids (CBG, CBN, CBC), terpenes, and flavonoids — appears to produce more comprehensive anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects. Our 2800mg CBD Oil uses a broad-spectrum formulation for exactly this reason.

Can I use CBD for both widespread and localized pain?

Yes — and in fact the combination approach is often most effective. Oral CBD oil provides systemic, full-body support for widespread pain and underlying inflammation. A topical roll-on or cream applied directly to specific painful areas addresses localized pain without affecting the rest of the body. Many of our customers with conditions like osteoarthritis or back pain use both together.

Is it safe to take CBD every day long-term?

The available evidence — including a 2017 review by the World Health Organization — indicates that CBD is generally well-tolerated with a good safety profile and no evidence of dependence or abuse potential. Long-term daily use is common among chronic pain sufferers and appears safe for most people. The most commonly reported side effects are mild: slight fatigue at higher doses, mild appetite changes, or temporary digestive sensitivity when first starting.

Will CBD show up on a drug test?

Standard drug tests screen for THC — not CBD. However, full-spectrum products contain trace amounts of THC (below 0.3%), and in rare cases at high doses, this trace THC could potentially trigger a positive result. If drug testing is a concern, choose a broad-spectrum or isolate product. We offer THC-free formulations for exactly this reason.
